Sun Article: Fat cat councils taking P for free

This article appeared in The Sun on 19th August 2011 and opens with the headline COUNCIL chiefs are rewarding staff with free parking — while hiking charges for everyone else.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, The Sun asked 353 local authorities in England if they charged their staff for parking. Of the 246 that responded, 60 per cent had free staff parking spaces, worth an average £529,647 a year.

Surrey County Council has 1,496 free parking spaces costing £4.36mn per year. Surrey County Council topped the list. The article states, “Locals parking near the council’s Kingston HQ saw daily charges rocket 17 per cent from £9.60 to £11.20.”
