Mayor’s letter to the Herald

This letter from Haslemere’s Mayor has been sent to It was published in the current edition of The Haslemere Herald.

Dear Sir

I am responding to the letter ‘ Support traders with free parking in last week’s Haslemere Herald  (30/11/12).

Whilst sympathising with the views expressed in the letter( re making a temporary arrangement whereby a number of shoppers could park  for free in the Waitrose Car park whilst the one hour free parking is ‘lost’ in West Street) , I would like to point out that the Waitrose Car Park is entirely under Waverley Borough Council’s jurisdiction and Haslemere Town Council has no authority to regulate /change its use.

However, I did contact Mrs Carole King , Waverley’s  Car Parking  Portfolio Holder to ascertain whether or not there would be  any  possibility that such a temporary arrangement could be arranged. Mrs King’s reply was that she felt that  residents were perhaps not fully  aware that currently there was a great call on all parking places in the Waitrose car park, and that every single place was needed. She was, therefore, unable to grant such a request.

Let us hope that the parking ban will be lifted well before the current  February date.

Cyndy Lancaster.
