E-mail from Surrey County Council today:
Earlier this year, the County Council undertook an informal consultation for new parking restrictions and residents only parking areas within Haslemere. The results from this informal consultation were considered at the Waverley Local Committee meeting, on the 21 September 2012. The Committee agreed to proceed to the next stage and formally advertise the proposed changes. Unlike informal consultation, the formal stage follows a defined statutory process and the period for receiving objections closed on the 16 November 2012.
I am pleased to confirm we received a substantial response to the formal phase of this consultation. I’m grateful that many residents took the time to provide us with their comments, expressing a variety of views and suggestions. Having discussed this matter with Officers I have agreed it is not practical to bring a report to the scheduled December meeting of the Committee. All comments must be properly considered and Officers will need to make some additional visits to the town to clarify some of the points raised. There is simply not time to do this justice and make the timeframe for the December meeting.
Officers will assess all comments and prepare a technical recommendation for the elected Members to make a final decision. The level of engagement from local people demonstrates how important this is to the area. Therefore I’ve decided to take a formal report to a special meeting of the Local Committee (to be held in public). We are investigating a suitable date in late January 2013 and this will be confirmed on our website in due course. The Leader is aware of my decision and fully supports the approach.
I hope this explains the process the County Council will be following and why any decisions cannot be made until the New Year.
