Congratulations from the HaslemereParking.com team go to Independent candidate, Nikki Barton, for winning the Haslemere seat in the Surrey County Council elections.
This is from yesterday’s Surrey Advertiser, ELECTION: Waverley vote sees independent surprise.
AN independent candidate stole the show at the Surrey County Council elections in Waverley, pipping the Conservatives to the post in Haslemere with 1,208 votes to 1,188.
But that was the only blip on the map for the Tories as they triumphed in the borough’s eight other divisions.
Nikki Barton decided to run for the Haslemere seat just five weeks ago, but has had huge support from members of the community who were said to be “sick and tired” of the ruling Conservative administration at County Hall.
Her decision to stand for election stemmed from the activities of a core of people who were disillusioned with how the council had handled plans for wide-reaching parking changes in the town.
And eyes watering after being elected, Councillor Barton said: “It is an amazing achievement. It has all happened very quickly but we have worked extremely hard.
“A lot of the people who voted for me were first-time voters who had previously said ‘what’s the point?’.
“I am really looking forward to making a real difference. We have been defending ourselves about ill thought out proposals for too long.”
